The HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) is the standardised Chinese proficiency test for non-native speakers. If you want to study a programme taught in Chinese, your HSK result is one of the first things a university checks.
The HSK levels
The widely used HSK has six levels, from HSK 1 (basic phrases) to HSK 6 (fluent academic and professional use). A newer framework with nine levels was introduced in 2021 and is being phased in, so check which version your test centre and university refer to. Each written level from HSK 3 upward is scored out of 300, with 180 as the usual pass mark.
The HSKK is a separate speaking test. Some programmes, especially in language and teaching, ask for it alongside the HSK.
Typical requirements by programme
| Programme | Typical requirement |
|---|---|
| Chinese language course / foundation year | None; you study the language |
| Bachelor’s taught in Chinese | HSK 4, often with a minimum score of 180 |
| Master’s or PhD taught in Chinese | HSK 5, often 180 or higher |
| Chinese language, literature, law or medicine in Chinese | Often HSK 5 or 6 |
| Programmes taught in English | No HSK; IELTS, TOEFL or proof of English-medium study |
Studying in English instead
Hundreds of programmes are taught in English, especially in engineering, business, international relations and medicine. They do not require HSK for admission, although some universities ask English-taught students to take basic Chinese classes or reach a beginner HSK level before graduating. Daily life is much easier with some Chinese, so it is worth starting early either way.
If you don’t speak Chinese yet
- Choose an English-taught programme, or
- Start with a one-year Chinese language or foundation programme, then progress to a Chinese-taught degree. Some scholarships fund this language year.
How to prepare
- Take an official mock test to find your real level before booking.
- Book early: popular centres fill up before scholarship deadlines. Home-edition online tests are available in some countries.
- Plan at least three to six months of study per level at the intermediate stage.
- Make sure your result arrives before your application deadline.
